RV Winterization Checklist

Protect Your Investment from Freeze Damage

Don't let winter destroy your RV's plumbing! This comprehensive winterization checklist covers everything from draining your water system to preparing your batteries and protecting your exterior.

Supplies You'll Need

RV antifreeze (2-3 gallons, non-toxic)
Water heater bypass kit (if not installed)
Blow-out plug (air compressor method)
Basic tools (screwdriver, pliers)
Tank cleaning wand
RV cover or shrink wrap
Moisture absorbers (DampRid)
Pest deterrents (mouse traps, repellent)
Tire covers
Battery tender/maintainer

Water System - Drain Method

Drain and flush black tank
Drain and flush gray tank
Drain fresh water tank
Open all faucets (hot and cold)
Flush toilet until empty
Drain water heater (wait until cool!)
Open low-point drains
Drain outdoor shower if equipped
Run water pump until dry, then turn off

Water System - Antifreeze Method

Bypass water heater (critical!)
Disconnect water filter if present
Connect antifreeze to pump intake
Turn on pump, run each faucet until pink
Flush toilet until pink
Run through outdoor shower
Pour 1 cup into each drain (P-trap)
Pour 1 cup into toilet bowl
Run dishwasher/washing machine if equipped

Battery & Electrical

Fully charge all batteries
Disconnect negative cable (or use disconnect switch)
Clean battery terminals
Check electrolyte levels (flooded batteries)
Store batteries in cool, dry place
Connect battery tender for long storage
Turn off all 12V switches
Turn off propane at tank

Exterior Prep

Wash and wax exterior
Clean and treat rubber seals
Inspect roof for damage, reseal if needed
Cover tires or move RV monthly
Retract awning, clean and dry first
Lubricate slide seals
Cover exterior vents (allow some airflow)
Check and inflate tires to max PSI

Interior Prep

Remove all food and perishables
Clean refrigerator, leave door cracked
Clean all surfaces
Open cabinet doors for air circulation
Place moisture absorbers throughout
Remove bedding or use mattress covers
Set pest traps and deterrents
Close blinds to protect from sun

Final Checks

Document steps taken (for spring de-winterization)
Take photos of current condition
Lock all doors and compartments
Apply RV cover if using
Set calendar reminder for spring prep
Check on RV monthly if possible
